Paulownia Body Wood
The classic J-Bass body shape, beloved for its contoured and comfortable design around areas like the armrest, is realized here with the distinctive curves of the body and the lightness of Paulownia. This tonewood, increasingly favored by custom builders, sits tonally between basswood and alder and combines outstanding resonance with smooth, musical response—all while remaining exceptionally lightweight.
Body Wood and Sound
Paulownia produces a smooth, rounded attack and a soft, deeply resonant sound—often compared to swamp ash. It delivers a relatively flat, even response from lows to highs, making it an excellent platform for covering diverse styles and genres with clarity and control.
Slim C-Shape Maple Neck
A well-seasoned hard maple neck significantly enhances playability and reliability. The slim C-shaped profile feels comfortable even for smaller hands, while the satin-matte finish delivers a smooth playing surface for effortless position changes and slides.
Semi-Rounded Neck Joint
The robust 4-bolt neck joint provides extended sustain comparable to set-neck designs, as confirmed through extensive testing. Bolt-on construction also offers advantages for repair and maintenance.
A semi-rounded neck plate and smoothed edges around the joint make access to higher positions (18–22 frets) more comfortable and natural.
Headstock
A newly designed decal logo highlights the Gopherwood identity. The PPS nut enhances sustain and clarity thanks to its crystalline structure, high-temperature resistance, and stability. The truss-rod access at the headstock allows for precise neck relief adjustment.
Tuning Machines
Vintage-style tuning machines with a 21:1 gear ratio provide precise adjustment and minimize backlash, contributing to stable, reliable tuning over extended playing sessions.
Fretboard
The 9.5″ (241 mm) radius fretboard in maple or purpleheart features 20 securely installed medium-jumbo frets and a 34″ (864 mm) scale length. Purpleheart’s dense, full-bodied tonal character adds definition and weight to each note.
JJ Pickup Set
The JJ pickup set uses ceramic magnets formulated with iron oxide, barium carbonate, strontium, and ceramic materials to produce a focused, textured tone.
The inherent bite and articulation of ceramic pickups are balanced by the smooth, resonant character of the Paulownia body, resulting in a rich, musical sound.
Pickup Volumes and Tone Control
Independent neck and bridge volume controls plus a master tone knob let you shape everything from sharp, cutting tones to smooth, rounded sounds.
The two single-coil pickups are wired in opposite phase, so when their volumes are matched, much of the 60 Hz hum is naturally cancelled.
Vintage Type Bridge
A 4-saddle vintage-style bridge, commonly found on classic J-bass instruments, provides a familiar feel and reliable performance.
It allows precise adjustment of curvature, string spacing, and intonation, so players can fine-tune the setup to their preferences with confidence.
